It’s an extended weekend as we all celebrate Presidents’ Day! Have fun, relax and enjoy what is left of winter!
Did you know that Presidents’ Day was not actually the real name of this federal holiday? In fact the real name is called Washington’s Birthday and was originally celebrated in the 1880s as George Washington’s birthday. It was celebrated every year on February 22nd, (Washington’s birthday) and it wasn’t until 1968 in which a bill was passed that moved a lot of federal holidays to a Monday, called the “Uniform Monday Holiday Bill” in which we started celebrating Presidents’ Day on the third Monday in February. There was a discussion during this bill that Washington’s Birthday be renamed to Presidents’ Day, although that was rejected. The reason for renaming was to also celebrate not only George Washington’s birthday but also Abraham Lincoln’s too, as his birthday was February 12th. Today, Presidents’ Day is how we all commonly know it, and what we all call it and is known as the celebration of the birthdays & lives of all Presidents.
