Online Shopping Buying Guide
Friday, December 6th, 2024
It is the gift-giving and gift-buying time of the year. You will want to be especially cautious of potential risks that come with online shopping and emails. With so many transactions happening online, we need to be mindful of these risks. Here are a few tips to help.
- Before clicking be sure to check the URL(the domain name), as some scammers will pick a URL that is close to the original. Check for the padlock in the address bar, the green lock means it is most likely a safe and secure website.
- Be sure to keep records. Learning how to take screenshots with the device you are using can prove to help you in the event of a problem.
- Inquire about return and refund policies prior to making a purchase. You do not want to be stuck having to pay pricey restocking fees.
- Be sure to use a secure payment method. We understand that this one can be tricky. Using a credit card can make a charge easier to dispute than using a debit card. Ideally, when available, PayPal is a great way to use a reputable company and avoid directly inputting your information into a website that you are not familiar with.
- Carefully read the fine print. Do a Google search on the company to see if there are any negative reviews or red flags.
- Research the product. Take your time to research your product. There are many avenues today that you can search or even ask for advice from an outside forum. This research could save you a big headache!
- Avoid scam or phishing emails. This time of the year scammers try desperate things. You may see emails about paying an invoice, or tracking a package. Before you click on anything, do your homework. When able always go directly to that company’s website.
- Avoid impulse buying! Social media and ads are made to interest you to click and buy, which can lead to you impulsively buying something that you did not want to purchase.
We do hope you found this helpful and that you encounter no issues with your online shopping during this holiday season!
