Do you own your website? A lot of companies or small businesses have a website but are unaware that they do not actually own their website. You may have paid X amount for it, and have a X amount monthly cost, but the website itself is not yours. If you want to move your website to a different host / server or if you are unhappy with your service and want to move elsewhere, you simply cannot. You are at the mercy of the system your website was built on, and since that system is only for that company, the website cannot ever be moved. Sure, you may own the content and pictures, but not the website or design which means the entire website needs to be rebuilt if you ever want to move it.
Be sure when you choose a company to have your website built or designed with that you do your homework and make sure that you do actually own your website, and should you want to leave you can take everything (including the website) elsewhere. Understanding the answer to that alone can save you a lot of time and more importantly, money!
At WebLeaps we build both custom websites as well as WordPress websites, which are both transferable. Although we hope that our customers are life-long, we also want them to be customers by choice, not because they are obligated to be.
